Staff Kudos ~ Debbie McKinney

I was laid off from a job in a field I had been working in for over 20 years. The industry changed and was absorbed by China. I didn’t know where to turn until I was so fortunate to meet Debbie McKinney. She was there every step of the way. The WIA program helped me obtain a new career in the surgical technology field. I am now working part-time at a surgery center. The entire staff at the Tarpon Springs One-Stop is friendly and helpful. I am working my dream job, thanks to Debbie McKinney. I am forever thankful. – Sherry Faulk

The WorkNet Pinellas team has no doubt that the credentials earned through FRW assessments and courseware have played an important role in helping their customers find better jobs faster than they would have otherwise.

“One of the things I noticed is 50 percent of the people who obtain the credentials got employment,” said Lysandra Montijo, MIS Coordinator at WorkNet Pinellas. “But what really struck me was it was sometimes within a week or two of getting the credentials. So getting the credential is really helping them with employment opportunities.”

WorkNet Pinellas customers also report a feeling of accomplishment when they earn their FRW credentials, which are signed by the governor. “Overall, as a program, I think it helps us to empower our customers,” said Montijo. “Sometimes, they come in with low self-esteem and they think they can’t do the work. We use this as a way to show them they can. Once our customers are empowered and confident they can do the work, it ultimately helps us succeed as well.”

Ghebriele Desta, a remedial skills instructor at WorkNet Pinellas, provides assistance to individuals who get stuck on the coursework or assessments.

“We have customers who go from having little education to earning advanced degrees,” Desta said. “I think one of the best things about our program is that it is easy to follow and navigate through the courseware. It’s not mind-boggling or busy, which is great for those customers who may have a little more difficulty learning, which would just frustrate them.”

Desta has seen first-hand that her customers have a sense of pride in their accomplishment and have more motivation in their job hunt once they earn their FRW credentials.

“I’m there from the very start introducing what Ready to Work is, working with them during the coursework, and when they get the credentials,” she said. “To see that impact, it does make a big difference.”
